The following text is an amended excerpt from my Wordpress music journal.

This summer brought many changes to my personal music library. First I started fresh with a Linux OS and finally said "farewell" to Windows. There was a brief period of limbo as I tested various open source media management software to find the right fit for my collection. I finally settled down with gmusicbrowser which outperformed Clementine and other major players in its handling of large libraries and in the incredible versatility and customization of its GUI.

This was the very first time since the launch of Winamp 5 (the amusing successor to Winamp 3) that I'd explored the power of music metadata to organize my library dynamically across multiple data points. (I'd never really saw the need during my years with MediaMonkey Gold.)

But as the summer drew to a close, I was still irked that my Subsonic media server lacked the function of genre browsing. I'd previously sidestepped this issue by generating mammoth genre playlists to serve as my personally-themed radio stations, each with hundreds or even thousands of the finest albums of their respective genre.

But it was this fresh start in the last few weeks that inspired my refinement of those playlists into distinct album libraries which would zero in on a specific moment of music history. The aim was to bring a semblance of order to the hundred thousand plus tracks in my music library and to give me a set of starting points to really explore the neglected and unplayed folders of my drive.

I'm proud to declare that this evening, the project was a complete success. I've created 100 all-killer-no-filler libraries showcasing each of the largest collections in my catalog. I found that 68% (9,300 albums) of my music library fell neatly into one of these 100 categories.

The following is an index of these 100 playlists, sorted by number of albums. This roster effectively summarizes and gives order to what is otherwise an insurmountable archive. I'm going to enjoy exploring these playlists throughout the fall and into the winter months.

For those among the TPS ranks with similarly large libraries, I highly recommend implementing such a project. It's a wonderful way to explore catalogs otherwise too large for you to take on in a single lifetime.

This is amazing, and I'm very impressed by this whole project. As someone with a large music collection similar to yours (several TBs), it's my eventual goal to organize something of this size and magnitude.

Great work!

How do you even survive without a metadata-based library index? :)

I'd spent years carefully constructing folder-based systems. For example:

I've yet to find a way to manage a number of discographic archives of this size exclusively via metadata, but I'm all ears if you have suggestions!

I need to sit down sometime to read all of this. Once my mac computers get old enough, I'm going to need a convenient way to move all my itunes playlists and albums to a linux music program.

I'd spent years carefully constructing folder-based systems. For example:

I like the way you organise the collection, similar to my favourite folder/album structure. I found that it was very time consuming and found it much easier to let the media player/music application hand all the organising, so much more free time on my hands to enjoy other things.

I also found that if a file was damaged or metadata changed, the integrity of the torrent was lost and would need to be re-downloaded. This can be a downright PIA if the folder/file name has been changed. The solution was to place all in a 'Music' folder and keep all the original torrent naming schemes, no more searching or re-naming when I wanted to resume/re-download or share a unseeded torrent in the future.

I do miss the nicely organised folder but as I said before so much more free time.

I don't have a plan to Organise Huge Discography by metadata, if I think of a way I will let you know.

i really liked this project but its not natively working on windows it seems.
Greetings, Mephisto. Not entirely sure I understand your difficulty. If you're trying to access the playlist content, my post was text-only and does not contain active links. It was simply an index.

Does that address your question?

sorry i was talking about gmusicbrowser.it seems a nice program but
Does gmusicbrowser works under windows ?
Almost, but playback and internet connection don't work. Although playback could work with gstreamer. I know gstreamer can be compiled for windows, but I don't know if anyone tried to compile the gstreamer perl bindings on windows, if anybody wants to try, tell me of your success/failure.
And of course to run gmusicbrowser under windows you need to install perl and the gtk2 libs (see this page).

I've never tried using genre, as my collection would be skewed to only a few genres. I moved to the folder method myself. Having a couple of "catch-all" folders for One Hit Wonders, Single Album Groups, and Soundtracks. If a Group or Artist makes more than one album, they get a folder for their albums. Each folder contains the group, or artist. Each album is then in another folder, with the naming convention of artist-album name-year.

This way, if I want to listen, or do a live show, on a specific artist, they are in a folder (unless, as in the case of some artists, they also did soundtracks).

The biggest problem is when you use a player, or dj software, that doesn't recognize folders, and throws the whole lot into one big pile (case in point, when I use my collection at work, as the systems at work have WMP)

Not to mention, that, for some reason windows doesn't recognize some of the metadata I created on my *nix system, and then, it all shows up as Unknown Artist / Unknown Album / Unknown Title (seriously a big PITA!)

Having more than 2,8xx folders, containing more than 37,xxx tracks, you can imagine the hell when a metadata specific catalog program doesn't recognize the metadata. But then again, a folder specific catalog system has its pitfalls just as much. I can't tell you how many times I've had to create a new folder to hold something that doesn't fall into the current scheme (like DJ mixes, no specific artist). In this case, I went with a folder Various Artists, or a folder specific for the DJ. Its still not perfect, but at least I can find something when I am looking.

I have a 1TB harddisk partition full of music, but lately I have realized that I listen to maybe 1% of it 99% of the time! To the laziness and lethargy :))
