The Pirate Society Public Blog

It has come to my attention that someone wrote on Reddit that TPS is a "waste of your time" when it comes to trying to get invites to trackers, especially ones which are harder to get to. (the Reddit poster wanted to get into a certain "big movie tracker." (as with TPS policy, we don't mention trackers by name without tracker staff permission in public blog articles, so just figure out which ones I'm referring to. ;) ) So this blog article is written for non-TPS members as a rebuttal. (We already have a thread going about this topic within TPS.)

Although I've written this many times before, currently TPS is not an invite forum. The invite section is only a small part of TPS. I've read the talk that you can't request or offer the "good trackers" at TPS because of our "No Movement...
A nod to a great book called "On Boxing" by Joyce Carol Oates about the culture and philosophy behind boxing. This article is about my personal interest in the sport as a fan. (Cannot say I ever tried it myself ;) )

My earliest memories of boxing was probably in 1974, when Wide World of Sports had a special on the up and coming hotshot heavyweight, George Foreman. The clips showed him practically destroying every opponent in sight, including "Smokin' Joe" Frazier. There was a huge buildup to the big championship between Foreman and the only rival considered his equal - Muhammad Ali . This fight was held in Africa, in what was then Zaire (not sure what it is called now) and the hype was tremendous. I was following the bout closely, but was not able to watch it until 2 wks later,...
This has been fairly big news in American internet sites, but to give a quick recap to our International members, Lilly Pulitzer is a women's fashion line which had been a favorite of the "Palm Beach" set. (Rich, old-money, women of leisure who like to hang out in areas like Palm Beach, Florida.) It has also become kind of a "preppy" symbol, so it became a favorite of wannabe sorority sisters particularly at universities in the Deep South. Apparently when that clothing line was really popular, it was worn by women whose last names were Kennedy, Rockefeller or Vanderbilt. (Perhaps Rothschild if popular in Europe ;) )

For those not familiar with the line (and I wasn't), it is basically bright colors with a "tropical" theme, like this:

Disclaimer, I'm not a pro on the technical aspects of the BitTorrent protocol, so I will discuss this in terms a relatively non-technical person can understand.

After a recent security breach at a private tracker resulting in members of a private tracker getting "scary letters" from their ISP, I thought I'd write this little article for the beginners to private trackers, especially those who started out in the public tracker world (like me).

In the public tracker world, there are things you could do that are big no-no's in the private world. For example, some torrent files would have multiple trackers pointing to it, allowing you to get more peers. In addition, you could use DHT or PEX, to allow connection to even more peers. It is beyond the scope to explain DHT or PEX. In simple...
Now I don't mean a snitch to an anti-P2P group, but to the staff of private trackers. Read on...

We had a post here at TPS where a member was upset that someone had "snitched" on him. Turns out he invited someone from an "invite forum" to one of his trackers and when tracker staff caught wind of it, he got banned. So here's some thoughts that came up. If he did a "giveaway" on that forum, chances are a tracker staffer would have easily seen it and the ban would have happened fairly quickly. This didn't happen. He got banned much later after the invite occurred, making him suspicious someone had "snitched" on him. I also don't know if the invite offer was done via an open "giveaway," or if it was done in private, but from what I understand, the tracker didn't like that he met his...
(APRIL FOOLS)
As of today, April 1, 2015, TPS will be now changing its focus to other topics. We used to be about torrenting, private trackers, and internet security/privacy, but now, we will soon by adding subforums to address these very important topics:

1. We will be an unofficial fan site for the NFL team The New England Patriots!!!

TPS will be your discussion site for all things about the wonderful team Mr. Robert Kraft has created, and about the most brilliant NFL coach ever (Mr. Bill Belichick), and about the greatest quarterback of all time (Mr. Tom Brady). Need I remind you all, Tom Brady is from my childhood home town of SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA! We can...
Welcome to ToTV!

I have been lucky enough to get an exclusive look at one of the most promising new trackers in a long time. In a world where the experience of BitTorrent is entirely uniform and, dare-I-say, quite often monotonous, ToTV has stepped in to break the mold.

This is a brand new television tracker brought to you by some true veterans of the BitTorrent community. Each person on the staff has years of development experience, many of whom I know personally and am excited to see emerge with a new project. When you first pass the registration screen it becomes clear this tracker has been striving to innovate the torrent experience and incorporate features that other sites are lacking. Their stated aim is to "bring about a new generation of...
We had a similar conversation at a tracker forum, so bringing it here. I remember back in my n00b days I didn't care at all about video quality. HD video was just getting started in 2008, and a lot of movie releases were the usual "1 or 2 CD" 700 MB and 1.4 GB rips from scene trackers. I was using public trackers in 2008, and so my collection was usually those scene releases.

Slowly, I learned about better quality stuff. For example, one tracker specialized in "AFR" rips, where the size was not set at a certain number, but was a fraction of the raw disk. The encoders also tweaked the settings such that the quality was better. In addition, there is a whole art to making a high quality video encode, and it involves using multiple programs as opposed to just using "Handbrake" or...
There has been some discussion about this since a "popular HD Tracker" just instituted formal download requirements. Now the policies of different trackers will vary. There are some which have no requirements at all. So a "collector" could just log in to his tracker every 2 months and not download anything ever. (This is "bad behavior" of course.) One collector here at TPS talked about setting up a script to automatically log into all of his trackers on a regular basis to prevent them from being pruned for inactivity. (He was banned for progressing to even worse "rule breaking behavior.")

So to circumvent this kind of behavior, some trackers have instituted download and upload requirements. Some are simple, in asking for activity within the first months of signing up, and then there...
This should go without saying, but I just had to ban a guy who made a dupe account. Over the years it probably has happened about 2-3 times a year and it is annoying as all hell (and embarrassing for me as the inviter) when this happens.

Just a brief overview on disabled and banned members here. A banned member (a "Castaway") is someone banned for something where there is clear and convincing evidence of wrongdoing. Sometimes such members are reported to us by trackers. For obvious security reasons, the trackers will not give us the "proof," but as our partners, we trust that the trackers know what they're doing when they say someone here is a "bad user." Occasionally they make mistakes and we just ask the member to clear their name with the tracker and we'll take them back at TPS....
